The Squat: General important information which is good to know!

Squatting is essential to maintaining functional independence and improving your fitness. All athletes need to squat; whether they are an Olympic skier or whether they are your 8o year old neighbors! It will keep your hips, back and knees in shape and functioning well into your older years.

The squat is a functional movement and all functional movements are mechanically sound and therefore, safe. Functional movements also produce a high hormonal response. (Refer to your class handout for information on neuroendocrine responses)

Squatting is not detrimental to the knees, it is actually rehabilitative. You have to squat to have healthy knees. Our bodies were designed for squatting. Most of the world does not even sit in chairs, but they sit in the squatting position. The whole world uses squatting when going to the bathroom! Only the industrialized world has created chairs, benches, couches, etc. We are causing a loss in functionality and we need to get it back!! But we need to do it correctly. This means, until we have great technique, we need to squat slowly and with great awareness of our posterior chain. (Hamstrings, gluteus, hips, and back muscles)

Here are some common faults of the squat. Think about your own squat and see if any of these points of performance (or lack of) apply to your squat…then we can talk more about it in class!

1.)  Lifting the heels (weight is in the toes)

2.)  Surrendering lumbar curve at the bottom of the squat

3.)  Not breaking parallel plane with the thighs

4.)  Slouching in the chest and shoulders

5.)  Looking down

6.)  Not fully extending hips at the top of the movement

7.)  Not engaging hamstrings and gluteus

I am hypoglycemic. I come from a diabetic family on my Dad’s side.
