Functional movement allows for the type of hormonal response in the body which is called neuroendocrine adaptation. This is a change in the body which affects you either neurologically or hormonally. Most important adaptations to exercise are because of these changes. Isolation movements (which are not functional) produce essentially no neuroendocrine response….which is why we do not use them. The hormonal responses we are talking about are increases in testosterone, insulinlike growth factor, and human growth hormone. The body responds by increasing its muscle mass and bone density….which is so good for us!! (Especially as we get older!!) Heavy load weight training, short rest between sets, high heart rates, high intensity training, are all associated with a high neuroendocrine response.
THIS IS WHY WE DO IT!!! WELL…AT LEAST A MAJOR REASON!! THINK OF THIS INFO WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WORKOUT WONDERING WHY THE HELL YOU ARE PUTTING YOURSELF THROUGH IT!! JUST KIDDING!
