What is functional movement? Why do we perform them?

These are natural movements which arise out of the demands of daily life. These movements are not invented or contrived. Squatting is standing from a seated position; deadlifting is picking any object off the ground. Natural movement typically involves multi-joint, multi-muscle movements. Isolation movements do not possess this quality and are therefore non-functional. Because functional movements are natural, they tend to be mechanically sound and therefore, safe. Most importantly, functional movement has the capability of producing power and intensity to a degree other movements cannot. This is where the results are!!
